Hello and Introduction
May. 18th, 2009 11:52 pmHello All,
This journal will be about my faith. I am Christian. I was raised as Southern Baptist and I now worship with a non-denominational church. There is no perfect church (congregation). Each church (congregation) -- even within your own denomination -- will have something that you do not believe. But it is important to have some things to be the same as you believe. These are
1.) Who/What is God (His character is there more than one deity or is there only one, etc.)
2.) How do you get to Heaven?
3.) Is the Bible the Word of God? Does it have mistakes? Does it apply today? Is there anything in the Bible that can change?
These are just three of the main things, I'm sure I'm forgetting some important things on what we should agree with the denomination/church leaders on when we are choosing a church/congregation to worship and have Christian fellowship with.
I will be addressing these three things first. I think I might start with the Bible question first.
This will probably be an eye opener for me too, since I have not ever done an in-depth Bible study like this. LOL
Where will I get my information? My primary source will be the Bible (many different versions that can be found on www.biblegateway.com). I will also use essays, websites, and books that I have found that can explain things in a better way than I can. I will give credit where credit is due. I also will be getting some information from the study notes in my study bibles.
As far as Bible Translations go the following abbreviations are the most common versions that I will use. When I use a version for the first that is not included in the following list, I will type out the whole name of the translation and then the abbreviation and then from that point on I will use only the abbreviation. If I forget to type out the translation name, or you don’t remember what the abbreviation is, just ask me in the comments section and I will tell you. :-)
NIV (my favorite) = New International Version
KJV (Largest accepted version) = King James Version
NKJ = New King James Version
There are some people who believe that only the King James Version is the true Bible. I am *not* one who subscribes to that belief. I will expand more on that in a later post. I have had several people tell me that NIV is missing stuff that the KJV has, but when I do my personal Bible Study (on the days I’m not doing Bible Study Fellowship [BSF] homework, I compare different versions, the NIV against KJV, NKJV, and other versions as well and I have yet to find anything missing. Usually the NIV says it in today’s English while the KJV says in King James (or Shakespeare’s) English. Reading the KJV is like reading something written by Shakespeare and so sometimes, you need it be said how it would be said today to get the full meaning of it. That’s why I like the NIV.
Please remember that this journal is of a religious nature so no flames. What is a flame? A comment that attacks the person and not the statement. Ex. “You are an idiot, bigot, stupid, etc.” is a flame. “The statement you made above is incorrect and this why I think so…..” is something that will be allowed. Any flames will be deleted and the flamer will banned from posting to my journal. And, yes, there might be some that I give more leeway to because I know them and have for a long time and I really don’t want to ban them, but don’t be surprised if you attack me personally, if I ban you, even if I do know you. I may or may not give you another chance, it just depends on my mood that day. This is my journal and I feel I have that right. :-)
But for a while at least, comments will be screened.
As far as private contact goes, I only accept private contact from females. This is to protect my marriage. I just know how I am and I don’t want to fall into temptation. I never have, but why put that temptation in front of me if I can avoid it all together? :-) Yes, males can comment on my journal, but let’s keep it public. No PMs, IMs, private emails etc. If you feel the need to email me, I will fwd the email to my husband and then cc any replies to him.
Also please be aware that as I remember an essential I will edit to add the essential to this post.
I’m not sure how often the updates will be, but hopefully I will be able to do this at least once a week. Maybe more, maybe less, I don’t yet.
Edit to add (ETA): No matter how different we believe, I think that we can still be friends. My openion of you will not go down *unless* you flame me or someone else. But don't be afraid to comment on why you believe differently than me. And if you do believe differently than me, then please try to show me where I'm wrong by using only the Bible. To me the only *scriptures* are the 66 books of the Bible. So using some other "scriptures" will not be proof to me.
In Christ,
Marie
